Find the right grill cover
A cover that actually fits is the cheapest insurance you can buy for a grill. It keeps rain, snow, pollen and grease-hungry critters off the hood, the control panel and the burners, so stainless steel stays bright and igniters keep clicking. How to measure for a grill cover
Measure the grill before you order, not after. Take the width at the widest point of the hood or cart, the depth from the front of the control panel to the back of the grill, and the height from the top of the hood down to wherever you want the cover to stop. For a built-in grill, measure the grill head only: the cover drops over the hood and control panel and ends at the countertop, so the island itself does not figure into it. For a cart model, measure down to the bottom shelf or the casters, depending on how much you want covered. If your grill falls between two listed sizes, size up. A slightly roomy cover still sheds water and slides off easily, while one that is half an inch small will not go on at all.
Cover materials and weather
Most of what you will find here is heavy vinyl or coated polyester. Vinyl is thicker and stiffer, sheds water readily and holds its shape over a hood; polyester is lighter and easier to handle when it is cold out. Many covers are lined on the inside so the fabric does not scuff a stainless hood or a powder coated cart. Vents, or simply a loose fit at the bottom, matter more than people expect: air needs somewhere to go, and trapped condensation will do more damage over a season than the rain would have. Let the grill cool and dry before covering it.
Built-in and freestanding covers are different
A built-in grill cover wraps the hood and control panel of a grill head set into an island, while a freestanding or cart cover reaches down over the cart, the side shelves and the tank area.
